The first time Red played this for me was on my birthday in 2000. He had recorded this song and a couple of others for me for my birthday. If you have ever had someone write a song for you you know how I felt...all mushy and happy and teary and impressed. Listening to the lyrics over and over about how life had changed since he had met me.
About a year later, he was playing that song at a party at our mountain home and Les (his old steel guitar buddy from the Hot Walker Days) piped up and said, oh, you rewrote that song-it sounds good.
I looked over at Red and he sheepishly smiled and said, "I like it better now honey".
So, I had found out his "secret" he had taken a song he had once written for another woman and re-written it so it was mine. Okay, I can live with that, after all, I thought, I am the one in his life now.
Well, I never knew what the "old version" sounded like till the other day-going through his old cassette recordings and I nearly cried when I realized the changes. In the original version, he "had to leave" this woman, in my version, "He had to stay".
I knew I had changed his life, but not till I heard the old version, did I realize how much.
Someday I will release the old version on one of the cds from the "Old Hot Walker Days" so you can hear it too.
Sailin Away by L.Seidman copyright 2002
I've had days when I couldn't win,
Stood up just to fall down again.
Been stuck in the mud on a dead end road.
Without a clue of which way to go.
But it's so good to be with you,
But it's so good to be with you.
Sailin away.
Well, I'm down on my luck and times are hard.
Crawl a few feet just to fall back a yard.
I can still see your smilin face.
Nothin ever gonna take your place.
And it's so good to be with you,
Yeah, it's so good to be with you.
Sailin away.
They can turn day in to night.
Try to tell me that black is white.
Say it's snowin' on a sunny day.
But nothin' can change your smilin face.
Friends may come and friends may go.
How were we supposed to know?
But I know you and you know me.
There's no better place to be.
And it's so good to be with you.
So good to be with you,
Sailin away.
