I knew Red back in the 80's while i was playing with Gatorkicks and he was playing with Hot Walker Band. He play with us on many cruises on the Emerald Seas and many other gigs. We recorded our first record at his studio in Hollywood,FL called "Long Neck Saloon" and another record about Russia,s boycott of the summer Olympics in LA called "Commie Stay Away". He was a awesome musician but most of all he was a awesome human being and someone that i truly called my friend.Sad to hear of his passing but will be forever in my heart and my music.

Yes, John, I still get people who are just finding out about Red's passing and it has been 3 and a half years since he moved on to his new life in the great beyond. Still doesn't seem possible to me...I'll answer the rest of your questions in an email-no need to bore the folks in the guest book with details;)

Glad you visited the site Joyce! It's great to know Bruce is down for the songwriter's fest in Key West...ahhhh, great memories there! My life is too busy to get down for all the variety of fun the Keys has to offer. Not only am I missing the songwriter's fest this week but the Islander Sailboat race-hope they have good wind-it sure is blowing here in northern Florida!

and thank you so much for the comment Cathy!
I remember the fiddle competition where Red allowed young Seamus to take 1st prize home instead of keeping it for himself for the 7th year in a row;) So many great memories... so many blessings...

May 4, 2011

We were in Key West last weekend for the Fiddle Contest and couldn't help but think of you. Thought you'd like to know that Seamus was in the running for 1st place, but let a 14 year old visiting from Michigan take that honor.
Seems he remembers someone doing that for him when he was young (...and he will never forget it ! ). I was pretty proud of him...
Hope all is well with you ,
Thinking of you,
Love, Cathy

Just visiting for the first time tonight. This is a wonderful tribute to a beautiful man. Sure do miss him. So many things bring him to mind. Especially now that it is KWSWF season. Saw Bruce working sound and Tropic on Thursday and immediately thought of Red and you, too. All my love, Joyce

John Robarge

February 23, 2011

Hello Diane,
I'm John Robarge formally of South Florida, Fort Lauderdale area, and for the past 15 year's, live here in North Orlando area of Lake Mary/ Heathrow fl.
I have just learned of Red's passing via your web site. the OMG factor hit me hard between the eyes as I knew Red fairly well, as I did all the ffella's of Hot Walker band, Red, Chad, Bobby, and Frank. What a GREAT group of guy's, so VERY VERY talented, and a ton of fun to know.
My father is a Country Music Hall of Fame inductee, TEX ROE. Father had the pleasure of being backed up by Hot Walker one show around 1993 in Hershey Pa. He was so impressed with Red, and the boy's. But Red he spoke of all the time, and always wanting to know what I heard or contact was with Red.
Losing Red so early on , and then Chad not so long ago to this day makes me so very sad, but the memories are certainly wonderful.
May I ask......what was the cause of Red's passing? I remember so well when he bought that piece of land in Georgia. He was so excited, and couldn't wait to leave Florida to start a new life. As I also remember the guitar shop he worked at, I think his dad owned?
Anyway, thank you for posting Red's music.

Diane

February 13, 2011

Red has been "around" a lot these past few days; on my mind, old friends of his who have just heard of his passing have emailed and roses have been appearing. Last night when I was reading aloud Chapter 17 from the book "The Shack" by William P. Young (my husband Don and I read to each other regularly) this poem made me feel and cry for Red more than I have in a long time.

They say you never get over the death of a loved one but it does "get easier" and this poem hit me hard-in a good way.

Breathe in me...deep
That I might breathe...and live
And hold me close that I might sleep
Soft held by all you give

Come kiss me wind and take my breath
Till you and I are one
And we will dance among the tombs
Until all death is gone

And no one knows that we exist
Wrapped in each other's arms
Except the One who blew the breath
That hides me safe from harm

Come kiss me wind and take my breath
Till you and I are one
And we will dance among the tombs
Until all death is gone

Rock on Red. Good to know you are still here.
Love, Diane

December 15, 2010

Hi all.....It's seems like such a long time since I put fingers to laptop keyboard here and, to be very honest, it's this and my 'phone calls to you, dear Diane, that keeps me going through all my long visits to my second home~~~~Poole and Salisbury hospitals. My record, so far, is to have spent 9 months of this year in a hospital bed! I am just recently out of Poole hosp ital after suffering a mini stroke, a TIA. All it did was to leave me with a weak right hand....I'll never play the concert grand piano again ( not that I could before lol )

As everyone here, my thoughts, in November, were to the fact that the genius that was Red and I sat here in my lounge with a can of Heinecan and a miniature bottle of Tequila, his favorite if I remember and I was going to listen to the boys playing "Watchtower" and raise a glass to the memory of the big man....Red.
It was just a minute into Red hitting his fiddle and with that smile he always had when playing and the damned power went out!!!
As I was on my laptop rather then my desk top, the lappy went over to battery but I knew that, in a few seconds, the playing would stop and I'd have just a blank screan.
Needless to say, I was cursing the Hell out of the weather and the frequent power outages that we were having But, after 20 or so seconds, the screen still showed the big Red smile as he kept sawing away at his fiddle! And then the seconds turned to minutes and still the boys were playing! I was sat there, totally gobsmacked that this was happening because I knew of old that the playback just couldn't last more than a few seconds and yet it just carried on.....right to the very end, something like nine and a half minutes, and just as the last note was played the laptop went blank!!! I suddenly realised that I had a Heineken in one hand and the tiny bottle of Tequila in the other and I hadn't and I finished both in just a few gupls!!! As someone with a scientific brain I just couldn't believe that it was Red, looking down on me but how else do I believe it???
When the power came back on I very quietly went through my mail and there was a letter from the Red Cross. I'd never got a Christmas message from them because I'm not religeous (sp?) and yet I felt the urge to open it and what do I find but a dozen little Christmas cards with Red Roses on the front and also a 2011 callender with roses on it! And the next day I pulled open a drawer on my dresser and found the 5 missing Tarot cards that were missing from the set that I'd sent to Diane so many months ago.....all this happened in less than 24 hours! One I could understand but all three things in less than a day is something I can't explain apart from~~~~if it's you, Red, I thank you for watching over me and all the other fans and family. I know that he's there because as I wake after my numerous operations~~9 in 2 years!!~~each time I hear his fiddle in my head!!

Anyhow Diane, Let me wish you and Don a long, happy and healthy together and I also wish this to all my friends out there in Red land.

Many thank's to Dave for your You Tube vids...lovely way to remember our friend. I, for one visit You Tube every day and it keeps the memory sharp of B&R and the fab music they played together.

Well, I wish each and every one of us a very healthy and happpy holiday and hope that 2011 is good for all of us. (where have all the years gone!!)

As always.....Rock on Red

December 7, 2010

You aren't late at all, Mike, you are right on time and, just like a few weeks ago when you were thinking of Red, Red was on my mind and and I sent you an email. He seems to inspire you the same time he "speaks" to me.

I smiled when I saw your post to this page because I just got online to relate this afternoon's "Red Sighting."

I was listening to what I call Project #36, a recording Bruce and Red did at the Hog - not for a CD but for the bass player and drummer they were beginning to play with in Destin, Florida who were unfamiliar with their music.

They recorded the whole night at THE HOG, one great tune after another, and all the chatter in between, the best jokes they told, the funniest things they said. When I listen to it I feel like I am in Key West again, listening to the Dynamic Duo of Red and Bruce...

I had "one of those feelings" Red was going to "say hello" and the instant I thought this I heard a siren outside.

Now I do not hear sirens-probably less than once a month-so when I heard it before I could even think, Here it comes" there it was-the siren blaring out of my speakers on the recording from the HOG. Then Red imitated it on his mandolin, just like he had did every time the noise interfered with their playing...

I smiled and thanked him for the hello, realizing all is good with the world.

So, happy holidays to everyone in the world and wishes for peace on earth, good will towards each other, and all that wonderful stuff!

Love, Diane (and Rock on Red!)

Sorry for being late, but have been away from my computer for a while. Red, I don't have to tell you that I think of you often. Your guitar that you weren't able to finish is finished now and hanging on my wall. It continues to give me inspiration for guitars that I am building. Thanks for opening the door.

three years have pased and I still reach for the phone. The last time I spoke to Larry I told him we had to talk and that it was really important. He told me about life in Fla. , I told him of my crazy girls ,of our new house on the bay and how he and Scott could go out fishing together the next time he was up. I never got to have that important talk and it still haunts me. Life is full of lessons..Forgive, if you can forget, and say I'm sorry and I love you whenever you get the chance.
I miss you La..your goofy laugh your song and your music..but most of all I miss my brother.
Thankyou for all your kind words.....around her "we're fishing..not catchin".....

I loved hearing and watching Red play, too, of course, but I really treasure the days we spent in the pool in Key West... Every time we talked I learned something new and amazing about my multi-talented buddy. He was a true Renaissance Man!

We missed you when you went from us and we still miss you now. That smile of yours could lift any brow and heal any woe making a friend out of any foe. The best gift you ever gave us to hand on to others will always be that 'Red Smile'

I thought this poem below, written by Jock Scott for Ian Dury, would make you smile.

I put all my eggs in one basket
The basket that you gave to me
One was called Hope, one was called truth,
Another called Peace
That makes three.

Now a moth circles round a bare light bulb
Oddly reminding me of Francis Bacon
And then I wonder just where you are
And what connections you are making.

Yes, such a swift departure
You left me clutching at a half-pint of lager
I looked up and you were gone
Leaving the music and all your mates
On the stage to carry on,
The next generation!
Bring 'em on! Bring 'em on! Bring 'em on!

So I'm left with the eggs and the Bacon
And you could be Oceans away
But if, when I yell, outside the gates of hell
You appear with a smile and a swagger
Maybe we can sit down in the Devils Arms
And order a fresh pint of lager.

God bless you Red :O)

I'd never spent so much time in a bar just to listen to the music. Sharkey's with Red and Ted was the high point of my week because I knew that as soon as they started to play, I would smile the rest of the night. Red knew how to make you FEEL how much he loved to play! Play it again, Red.
Thanks Diane for reminding me.

Jane and I have been going to Key West since 1996. Of all the music (and there's lots of it) our favorites were Bruce and Red. We used to get that little front table at the HB and just listen. In between songs there was always a word or comment that made us laugh. We would watch in awe when Red fired up that fiddle. We missed him when first we heard and we miss him still.

back in 2001 i made my first visit to keywest. just fell in love with the island. since then, been averaging 3 visits a year. once i went on webcam page of keywest.com and found the hogsbreath cam and first found bruce and red performing, "all along the watchtower"! wow! then i bought the cd from red's website and just loved those guys. then during one of my visits, they were at the hog playing!! sat during the entire show and just waited for my song, the wathctower! when they did that song live, my jaw was on the floor! i went up to red and shook his hand and the warthm and friedliness of him was just so pure. plus he was drinking a heinken too which is my favorite beer. we had a short conversation and it meant the world to me! sadly when i found out about his passing, i cried and said a prayer. i have the video of the watchtower on my favorites on my laptop and when i need to feel energized, i play it. love ya red!! god bless you and many thanks for being a part of life i truly cherish! rick c.

I remember being introduced to Red a number of years ago by my friend Billy Davidson at the Key Largo Golf Club. I could feel the warmth and genuiness radiating from Red as we talked and played golf that day. I also remember traveling to Morada Bay and the Hogs Breath Saloon to see him play with his partner Bruce Isaacson. I was shocked and saddened when I learned of his passing 3 years ago by Billy. He was a true musical talent and a genuinely nice human being and is greatly missed by those fortunate enough to have known him.

We will never forget seeing Bruce & Red around Thanksgiving and then coming home and getting a phone call from Bruce that Red had passed on. We were in shock and came back down to KW for the memorial at the Hog.

We will always remember his kindness and easy going personality. He always wanted to chat about music, Maine, his travels and so many other things.

He was a brilliant musician and was so passionate when he played. We always loved to hear him and continue to listen today. That is how we will always remember him.

Three years ago today was the happiest day of Red's life. He said felt good physically, he acted like he felt great mentally and he even had admitted to saying a prayer of thanks. He did yoga in the morning and we walked in the woods in the afternoon. He was my roadie for a yoga presentation in the evening and sat in the audience and applauded me at my show. We left there joking about how wonderful it would be for him to play music in the Old Town area, his originals and Frank Sinatra and whatever else he felt like playing...

It still doesn't seem possible he is really gone from this earth plane. I beleive he watches over all of us trying to help us go in the direction of the light where true happiness is found.

He would always say with that incredibly contagious laugh of his, "Live like today was your last-cause some day it is going to be!"

Hey, Red, we are doing the best we can-and thanks for being you!

Love, Diane

Diane

November 23, 2010

Feeling sad today.

Perhaps it is because Red loved The Beatles and John Lennon and the past 2 nights we have been watching the PBS specials on the Fab Four. I remember an art exhibit Red and I attended in Ft. Lauderdale sponsored by Yoko Ono-art John and Yoko did separately and together...

Watching Yoko talk of her husband's death at the prime of his life and how he was taken so suddenly hit me hard. How it was, and still is, so hard to believe it happened. I sympathize, I have been there.

Days like today I just feel sad he left this world so suddenly, so unexpectedly and on the happiest day of his life. I guess The Universe knows what it is doing.

I have a new life now. I am happy with my new husband and he is so kind and understanding of my continuing relationship with Red and his music. He asks questions like, "What did you like the most about Red?"

My answer, "His love for me, his love for music, his grin, his sense of humor, his talent, his stories, how he always took time to talk to everyone who wanted to talk to him and how he always cherished the time we had alone together."

I know Red is fine, where ever he is now. He has made it clear a few times he approves of my new life with a rose appearing at precisely the right moment.

I listen to him and watch him on the links I have on the news page on this website. I know I am lucky I can see and hear him still, whether it is on my computer on in my mind. There isn't a day that goes by I don't think of him.

After doing the 12 steps for Codependency this summer (highly recommend EVERYONE reads the book by Melodie Beattie) I understand Red (and myself) more than I did while he were here.

Red, I am sorry you left this world so suddenly and so young.

Red, I love you now more than ever and I miss you and your great hugs.

Great time in the Keys and believe me Bruce and I did the toasting proud. One afternoon in Buffalo Bills it was very slow and as Bruce played I was sure I could hear a fiddle.I mentioned it to Bruce on his break and lo and behold he said that he sometimes imagines the fiddle himself. Peace and good health to all. Gus

October 11, 2010

Thanks for the congrats guys!

Please toast the fiddler for me while you are in Key West Gus, I can't drink anymore so I am counting on you!

Had another Red sighting on the way south. Stopped in Virginia Beach to visit ARE (Association for Research and Enlightenment-Edgar Cayce's Place;) Went to take photos of the famous "green couch" from which Edgar did thousands of medical intuit readings. I was thinking about how I never would have been able to study and travel as much if it hadn't been for Red and said a silent thank you to my late husband when I noticed a glass red rose on the shelf at the head of the bed.

I asked the tour guide what the significance of the rose was and he said he didn't know and, "Come to think of it, I don't think I noticed it before now."

I smiled and told him I thought it was my late husband saying hello, which he does often. Even though I am not surprised at the synchronistic times his signs show up it nearly takes my breath away each and every time.

If anyone wants to read my free e-book, 9 Months Ago Was Yesterday, it's on my www.DianesDetox.com website...

Rock on Red!

RED SIGHTING- AUGUST 20, 2010
Camp Etna, where I am spending the summer doing volunteer carpentry working to rejuvenate many buildings, is a spiritualist camp. Spiritualists believe we maintain our personality after we pass on and they believe their readings prove this fact. At the end of each spritualist service the medium (the person who believes they get messages from the other side through clairaudience-hearing things, clairvoyance-seeing things or clairsentience-feeling things) goes to the audience and picks people sitting there and asks if they may, "Come to them," so they can give them a brief reading. When they answer positively this also gives the medium the ability to tap further into their live spirit and their aura to see, hear or feel who may be coming through for them.

On Friday night I was sitting with Don, the man I will marry next Saturday the 28th, and his mother, Phyllis. The visiting medium from Boston came to our section and said, "I have 3 men standing behind you 3. The one behind you," pointing at Phyllis, "is tall and thin and wants to take you in his arms and dance and dance and dance. He has a very strong heart connection with you so he was a spouse or partner and he wants you to know he still loves you and is proud of all you have done since he passed. I leave you with his love and blessings." We knew this was her late husband who stood about a foot taller than her. He was a musician and he loved to dance and dance and dance with her.

Then she pointed at Don, "I have a gentleman standing beside you so he was not in your family but a good friend and he keeps turning something on the wall. A thermostat, he was always adjusting the temperature. I am not sure what his message is but he seems to try to keep it warm for you." Don laughed and said, "I know exactly who you are talking about." He explained later he used to have a friend/tenant who spent an incredible amount of time adjusting the thermostat trying to get it warmer and warmer. Apparently the man didn't understand how thermostats work.

Then she pointed at me and brought her arms up to her chest and crossed them and said, "I have a man standing beside you with a very strong heart connection. He loves you very much. His arms are crossed and he is saying, "I brought her here so she could help this place revive and find her true happiness. I am responsible for bringing her here and I am proud of all she is doing." I smiled and told the medium I knew of who she was speaking-you never lead the medium on by telling her who it is but just affirming whether or not you know of whom she is speaking. I was hoping for something a little more definitive when she said, "I am not sure why but I want to throw rose petals at you."

I gasped and tears trickled down my cheeks and I said, "Thank you." Don took my hand and smiled at me because he has read my book and knows Red has sent me roses frequently since he has passed; in surprise bouquets, giant stuffed roses or dramatically in petal form. They all stem back to a time when he was alive and spread rose petals all over the motor home after one of our unpleasant disagreements. After driving my truck down from Michael's in northern Florida to Red's waiting arms in the Keys and his humble apology for being RudeRed (what he called himself when he was nasty to me;), I opened the door to the motor home to see rose petals everywhere. I was so taken by his thoughtfulness and thanked him for being so imaginative when he said sheepishly, "I can't take all the credit. I bought them at the $9/dozen stand and when I put them in the vase the petals all fell off. I just picked them up and spread them everywhere cause I couldn't think of anything else to do with them."

He was such a sweetheart and we loved each other so much. Don and his family know that and believe Red is still here and comes through every so often pretty strongly. They are thankful he helped bring me here to Camp Etna. It seems every time I think about canceling the www.redsmusic.com site I get someone writing in the guestbook saying how much they appreciate my keeping his music alive. I haven't sold a CD in well over a year but thanks to my wonderful tenant and the popularity of the exercises I teach I can continue to afford to keep his music site going.

Blessings to everyone and if you want to read the free online book I wrote about the 9 months following Red's passing it is on my website www.DianesDetox.com.

Rock on Red!
Blessings everyone!
Love, Diane

Diane here-writing for Garry-seems he was in the hospital again for what seemed like FOREVER-since last November...and now that he is out he is going back in for another surgery on his poor ole bumm. Which, according to him, will delay his trip to the US for several months...but he will make it someday!!! He sends his love to everyone.

Many people tell me they hear his fiddle when they walk through the HOG. I have no doubt he spends much of his time inthe other dimension playing in Key West and back home at the mountain...

I miss Red! 7 years ago we visited KW for the first time and sat in Hog's Breath where Bruce and Red welcomed us with their song! We've now become fresh water conchs and I often walk through the Hog and still hear his fiddle. His energy and music is still alive in KW and our hearts! I love their song "Comin Home"! I'll never let him slip away!

Red and Bruces' rendition of "China Girl" is my favorite all time song.As a matter of fact, their CD,that I bought off them at The Hogsbreath, is the only one in my car.My deepest sympathy to you on the passing of one of the most talented musicians i have ever heard.Rock on Red.

Happy Birthday my dear. It's still hard to believe you are gone from this earth plane. I called your mother today to tell her I got an email this afternoon telling me the house I built for you has been sold. It brought tears to my eyes to know our home would be lived in by someone else. Happy tears and sad tears. So many wonderful times we spent there. Thanks for the memories sweetheart. Love, Diane

Hey Chris, I had heard Red tell the story a thousand times-glad to hear from his partner in crime! Altho-everyone has laughed and asked why you didn't take him out! Hope you enjoy his web site and his stories here. I will always miss that crazy fiddle player!

Hey Diane, I was a friend of Red's thru Les in Dahlonega. Red and I almost took out Newt Gingrich with a wagon team one year in Dahlonega. I haven't talked with Les in a while and just found out about his passing while looking up some music on google. He was an all around good guy and someone I had hoped to look up one day, I'm sorry I waited too late.

Well, CD Baby has changed their rules. The All Red-All Original CDs I sent to them do not meet their standards for distribution because they don't have a printed insert-so anyone wanting Red's CD can order through me by emailing me at Reddisetgo@aol.com Hope you are all having a great summer:)

Thank you all for your wonderful comments. It seems every time I think I might just let this website disappear someone tells me they like it and that is enough to make me keep it going. Rock on Red!

Also, Red was honored in a radio show called 3D Radioactivity produced by Marty, friend/fan of his and mine. It was aired last Wednesday and was called, "I Hear Dead People." You can listen to it in it's entirety at http://3dradio.mypodcast.com/ . Marty broadcasts from the university every Wednesday night from 5-7pm and his shows entertainingly different and worth a listen!

Red's All Red-All Original CD is available by emailing me now but will soon be available on a CD Baby link.

Can I say it again? Rock on Red!

Peacefully yours, Diane

Dear Diane,
Thank you for posting Red's recordings on the web.
We have vacationed in the Keys for a number of years and had run into Red at various venues. It was always a treat. In addition to sharing his music he also shared his company.
Thank you again for allowing us to hear his music.
Sincerely,
Susan Burton

“Thanks for Red's CD, it's really great to here his music. It's sounds like experimental bluegrass, a lot of artistry.”

Actually, this is from Joel Nelson via Alex Counts through Diane...I am sure Joel would want me to share his comment. Thanks Joel. It is good to hear his music.

Just got back from a trip to Key West where I distributed 18 copies of the All Red-All Original CD to friends and fellow musicians. I hope they enjoy it and share it. All of the songs are available as downloads for free on this web site on his music page-or if you want a copy of the CD you can email me at Reddisetgo@aol.com and I will send one to you, $10plus shipping & handling.

It was good to hang at the Hogs Breath in Key West. Not the same without the fiddle player but the Carter Brothers played some great music and Eric Holt and Mike McAdams really rocked out the mid shift!
Chuffed? proud? surprised? hmmmm-it's all good!

So sorry I missed the anniversary date of Red's death, I was incarcerated again...stop it Diane you make me sound like I am in prison where you get 3 decent meals a day not like this miserable hospital food...

Anyway, friends, Garry called me and we tried to type what he wanted to say and got to laughing and couldn't finish. He just wanted to let everyone know he ran over his keyboard (his helper put it on the floor unbeknownst to him) and cannot type right now.

So, have a happy holiday everyone, from Garry, from me and all the other elves!

Peace and carrots!
Love, Diane
